Near about 3rd century BC,Goa was part of the Maurya Empire,where emperor Ashoka of Magadha ruled.In his regime,many Buddhist monks laid the foundation of Buddhism in Goa.Significantly,different dynasties ruled over Goa.In this regard,it was ruled by the Bhojas of Goa between the 2nd century BC and 6th centuryAD. Though Goa was also ruled by Chutus of Karwar, Satvahanas,Western Kshatraps, the Abhiras of Western Maharashtra,Bhojas of Yadav clans of Gujarat and also the Konkans Mauryas as feudatories of the Kalachuris.
While in 1312,Goa was under the ruling of the Delhi Sultanate.Because of the lose grip of the kingdom over the region,it was forced to surrender it to Harihara I of the Vijaynagara empire in 1370.The monarchs governed the territory until 1469.Then it was usurped forcibly by the Bahmani Sultans of Gulbarga. After the downfall of that dynasty, the region was captured by the Adil Shah of Bijapur.
The Portugese defeated the Bijapur Sultan Yousuf Adil Shah with the help of a local ally,Timayya in 1510.They settled in Velha Goa. In the mean time, the Portuguese shifted the capital to Panaji from Velha Goa in 1843.Utlimately Goa was annexed in India in 1961.The Portugese ruling was forced to leave Goa,Daman and Diu after the Operation Vijay of the Indian military.The Se Cathedral at Old Goa is an example of Portugal architecture. and one of the largest churches in Asia.
