Nagaland is one of the states of Northeast India.The border of the state lies near Assam in west whereas Arunachal Pradesh and Assam to the north.While to the east Nagaland touches Burma (now Myanmar) and to the south is Manipur. With its own distinct customs, language and costumes, each tribe owns its unique character. However, their language and religion are almost common. Significantly, most of the state’s population is Christian.
The people of Nagaland mostly depend on agriculture.It is the main source of the state’s economy. The main crops are rice, corn, pulses, tobacco, millet, sugarcane, potatoes, oil-seed and fibre. Besides, tourism, forestry, real estate, insurance and miscellaneous cottage industries are the revenue generating means for the state.Nagaland was declared sixteenth state of India in 1963.
Moreover, Nagaland has been suffering from insurgency and inter-ethnic clashes since 1950s. The economic development of the state was hugely affected due to such disturbances. One of the main reasons was the scarce resources on law and order as well as security.The geographical condition of the state is strenuous due to almost covered with mountains.The highest peak is Mount Saramati, ranging between Nagaland and Myanmar.On the other hand, Nagaland is rich in variety of flora and fauna. Significantly, it has been suggested as the ‘Falcon Capital of the World.’
Though there is no record that where did the Nagas come from. Some of the anthropologists suggest that they belong to the Mongolian race.The mentioned tribes migrated in India at different times. The state had also witnessed the freedom struggle of India against British Empire.In 1944,Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose led Indian National Army entered India from Burma (now Myanmar). In prior, the Nagas participated in the Second World War by the side of British.It is said that approximately 4000 troops of British Empire lost their lives in the world war whereas 3,000 Japanese troops died in the battle. Most of the troops of the British were the Nagas.
The participation of the Nagas in Second World War was vigorous in which the Japanese troop was defeated badly and chased from Kohima. It is popularly known as The Battle of Kohima. In the memory and honour of the martyred brave Nagas, Kohima War Cemetery was built.There is a War Museum too along with.There is Kohima Cathedral on Andura Hill near the memorial.Even the friends and family members of the deceases Japanese soldiers visit there to pay homage to their dears.Prayers are held in this regard.
As a matter of fact, there is much to do for the overall advancement of the common people. The government machinery should do in this course with public-private partnership system.It is beneficial in some respect whereas spreading education among the backward people is necessary.
