IIT Kharagpur is the oldest and highly reputed technical institution of India.The name ‘Indian Institute of Technology’ was considered before the formal inauguration on the institute on 18 August 1951 by eminent educationist and freedom fighter Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.Established in 1951, it is recognized as the institution of National importance.It consists of Aerospace Engineering,Agriculture & Food Engineering,Architecture & Regional Planning,Biotechnology,Chemical Engineering,Chemistry,Civil Engineering,Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering,Energy Engineering,Industrial Engineering,Instrumentation Engineering and Manufacturing Technology.Besides several other professional courses are also offered in this premiere institute.
This higher studies institution comprises of 19 academic departments, eight multi-disciplinary centres. IIT Kharagpur is ranked 286 in the world QS rankings and fourth in national perspective.Admissions to the most undergraduate and postgraduates courses is granted through written entrance examinations.Apart from these there are several ongoing Research Work Programs on various projects.

Candidates qualified the IITJEE can apply for admission in 4-year B.Tech, 5-year B.Arch,5-year dual degree(integrate Bachelor of Technology and Master of Business Administration).The fees for the 4-year degree courses is Rs 97,500 per year.Besides,in 5-year combo course of B.Tech and MBA the fees is Rs 81,510 yearly. For the 5-year full time Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) the yearly fees is Rs. 32,460. Apart from these the 3-year full time course of Bachelor of Legislative Law (LL.B) and LL.B-Honours are also included. The stream provided for LL.B course is Intellectual Property Rights.The yearly fees for both the courses are Rs. 1,00,000 each.On the other hand the students enjoy placements from the various inland and global companies.
This institution of National Importance has a significant historical background. With the selfless help of Dr.Bidhan Chandra Roy(erstwhile Chief Minister of West Bengal),eminent Indian educationists Humayun Kabir and Jogendra Singh formed a committee in 1946 to create a higher technical institutions “for post-war Industrial development of India”.This was followed by the creation of a 22-member committee headed by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar. On the grounds of highest concentration of industries, the then Chief Minister persuaded Pt.Jawaharlal Nehru(erstwhile Prime Minister of India) to establish the first institute in West Bengal. In the course of time the first Indian Institute of Technology was thus established in May 1950. It was named Eastern Higher Technical. The location was Esplanade East,Calcutta. In September 1950 the institute was shifted to to its permanent campus Hijli,Kharagpur. It was 120 kilometers south-west of Calcutta. It is known that Hijli had been used as a detention camp during the British regime in India to keep the freedom fighters captive.
It is said that IIT Kharagpur is the 3rd oldest technical institute in the state. The first is IIEST Shibpur (1856) while Jadavpur University,established as Bengal Technical Institute in 1906,is the second. The first session started in August 1951. There were 224 students and 42 teachers in the ten departments of the institute. The institute’s classrooms,laboratories and the administrative blocks were placed in the historic building of Hijli Detention Camp(now Shaheed Bhawan).
